Scholarships and Outreach

Enriching Lives Through Choral Music

One goal of BAC is to provide educational outreach to the community by granting scholarships. BAC offers three scholarships for local senior high school choral students who plan to pursue an undergraduate degree in vocal music education or performance and one for graduate music students at University of Houston.

We urge all qualified applicants to apply.

Meet the Director

Barry Talley

BAC is pleased to introduce new artistic director Barry Talley, who steps to the podium after the 2023 retirement of Milton Pullen. Talley graduated from West Texas State University with a bachelor’s in music education. He began his career at Deer Park High School in 1981 as assistant director, becoming head director in January 1982. Under Talley’s leadership, the program grew from 80 to more than 500 students. Deer Park choirs were honored to perform at four Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) conventions and four American Choral Directors Association National Conventions. Talley was named as the director of fine arts for Deer Park Independent School District in 1992; he continued to teach half days for the next 23 years. In 2015 he left the classroom to assume full-time responsibility as executive director of fine arts for the district.

Talley served as vocal vice president and later president of TMEA. He was honored by the Texas Choral Directors Association as the recipient of the Choral Excellence Award in 2013. Talley has worked in recording studios in multiple cities making commercial jingles and educational/vocal demonstration recordings. As a choral composer, Talley has more than 25 published songs and served as a writer, editor, and recording producer for the Hal Leonard Choral Textbook Experiencing Choral Music.

Talley retired from Deer Park Independent School District in 2020 and celebrated his 40th anniversary as the music director at Deer Park United Methodist Church in 2022. He is joining BAC for the 2023 fall season.
