The Bay Area Chorus is proud to host the annual High School Vocal Music and Vocal Music Education Scholarship Auditions in a concert competition called “The Voice” each year in early spring. Applicants each sing two selections as their audition in front of a panel of judges and a live audience, and the Bay Area Chorus performs a short selection from their repertoire while the judges deliberate.

The Bay Area Chorus High School Scholarship Programs were established for the purpose of providing scholarships to deserving high school seniors who are planning to pursue advanced studies in choral music at an accredited college or university. 51 scholarships have been awarded since 1980 when the first scholarship was given out. Two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 are generously sponsored: the Priscilla Ennis Bay Area Chorus High School Vocal Music Scholarship and the MaryEllen Oliver Bay Area Chorus High School Vocal Music Educator Scholarship sponsored in memory by her husband, Dr. David Nickeson. Presently, Deborah Kidwell and Dr. David Nickeson are the Co-Chairs of the BAC Scholarship Committee, donating a great deal of time for many years on this project.
The Bay Area Chorus Priscilla Ennis Vocal Music Scholarship (Download the application form) is awarded to a high school senior planning to major in vocal performance at an accredited university or college. Applicants will be judged based upon their musical accomplishments and service to their choral department (20% weighted) and their audition performance (80% weighted). The Bay Area Chorus Priscilla Ennis Bay Area Chorus Vocal Music Scholarship is generously underwritten by Priscilla Ennis (ReMax Space Center).
The Bay Area Chorus MaryEllen Oliver Vocal Music Education Scholarship (Download the application form) is awarded to a high school senior planning to major in choral music education at an accredited university or college. Judging is based upon their musical accomplishments and service to their choral department (20% weighted), their audition performance (70% weighted) and a 150 word (maximum) essay titled “Why I Want to Be a Music Teacher” (10% weighted). The MaryEllen Oliver Bay Area Chorus Vocal Music Education Scholarship is generously underwritten by Dr. David Nickeson in memory of his wife, MaryEllen Oliver.
Scholarship Audition Details
A concert featuring the scholarship applicants will be presented in early spring 2018. Each applicant will perform two classical vocal solos of his/her choosing and must supply an accompanist. The solos should be in contrasting styles to give the judges will evaluate a better picture of the applicant’s abilities. An independent panel of three judges will evaluate the auditions. During the deliberation of the judges, the Bay Area Chorus will present a concert under the direction of Artistic Director Milton Pullen. Tickets will be available from the BAC website and from chorus members.
Senior students enrolled in the following Houston area school districts are eligible to apply for a BAC vocal scholarship: Clear Creek, Friendswood, Dickinson, Texas City, Pearland, La Porte, Deer Park, Pasadena, Galena Park, Alvin, Santa Fe, Channelview and Goose Creek Independent School Districts.
Scholarship Application Instructions
- Provide a recommendation from their high school choral director.
- Submit a completed application for either the Oliver or the Ennis Scholarship.
- All application materials must be postmarked by the specified date to Scholarship Competition, 1003 Lake Country Dr., Seabrook, TX 77586.
- Include your song selections in order, a short bio, and the name of the accompanist (required)
- Applicants for the Oliver Bay Area Chorus High School Vocal Music Education Scholarship must also submit a 150 word (maximum) essay entitled: “Why I Want to Be a Music Teacher”
